Engaging with Youth Groups at VSLA Training
In Kwale, AYT actively involved in a four-day training session
organized by our consortium partner, Anglican Development
Services Pwani (ADS Pwani), as part of the Shared Futures project.
This initiative, implemented by a consortium of five organizations,
aims to address the root causes of violent extremism and economic
marginalization among Kenyan youth by promoting interfaith
dialogue, economic empowerment, and community resilience. Our
Project Officer, Mr Saidi Kingi, engaged with two youth groups,
focusing on establishing Village Savings and Loan Associations
(VSLAs). This model empowers communities to pool savings, access
low-interest loans and build financial resilience, offering a sustainable
solution to economic challenges.
During the training, Mr Saidi had the opportunity to address the
groups, introducing them to AYT’s mission and expertise in youth
economic empowerment. He explained how AYT supports young
people through skills development, mentorship, and opportunities for
sustainable livelihoods. Mr Saidi also encouraged further interaction
and collaboration with the groups, emphasizing the importance of AYT Project Officer, Mr. Saidi Kingi, addressing a youth group at the Village Savings and Loan Associations

such as unemployment, poverty, and social exclusion.
The training covered not only VSLAs but also practical skills in
kitchen gardens, climate-smart agriculture, poultry farming, and value
addition for agricultural products. These topics are critical for
fostering economic independence and resilience, particularly for
women and youth in marginalized communities. Equipping
participants with these skills enables the Shared Futures project to
create sustainable livelihoods and reduce vulnerability to
radicalization. Mr Saidi emphasized the value of collaboration,
stating, “Partnerships are essential for creating sustainable solutions.
By working together as a consortium, we can empower communities
and amplify voices to have meaningful change.”
The skills and knowledge gained from this training will have a ripple
effect, empowering not only the immediate beneficiaries but also
their families and communities. Through fostering financial
independence and interfaith cooperation, the Shared Futures project

AYT remains committed to supporting such initiatives, ensuring that
youth and young women have the tools and opportunities to lead
change in their communities.
Countering radicalization and building resilient communities requires
collective action, and we are grateful to our partners ADS Pwani, the
broader consortium and Cordaid for their dedication to this cause.
Through this collaboration, we can address complex challenges and
create opportunities for young people to thrive. The Shared Futures
project is a great example of the power of partnerships in driving
sustainable change and building a brighter future for all.
